WHITE ASHES...

I really have discovered that it is the little things in life that count the most. A few months ago now I was just filling in some time at the local Salvation Army thrift shop… I try to pop in every now and again because you just never know what you may find.

I came across this book – it looked kinda old from the cover and when I pulled it out from the shelves it had this little charm about it.

You see what I mean?  All ratty and tattered and discoloured. So anyway, I opened up to the very first page and look what I saw…

Yes, that’s right! A hand written personalised note from 1913! My heart almost did a flip flop right there in the Salvos shed on the concrete floor.

And right there – on that very first page – to the right of that hand written note was the price. . .

Yup!!   Yipee skipee !!  Bargain price of … you guessed it … just one dollar.

Oh, was I one very happy girl that day. I was like a kid in a candy store, and not because of the ridiculous price on a tatty old book. It was because at one point – ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO – this book was written, published in 1912, and given as a cherished gift from M someone… I can’t quite make out the name on the signature… and I wonder who it was for, who read it.

I have a love of old, unusual items that tell a story of their past.

So yes, White Ashes, you are now cherished by me and can sit pride of place on my little table of pretty things in my entry nook.

That way I can look at you every time I walk past and wonder who it was that you were intended for and how it came to be that you lasted one hundred years in what is now this modern throw away world.

That's a lovely find! I have a number of old books, cherished each for a different reason. I think links to the past such as this, are important, even if its someone else's past and not family or anything. I like the idea that maybe in a hundred year's time someone might find a book I'd written in, or somesuch, and think 'wow!'

Gosh this post is lovely! I too love finding old books in op shops. I bought a leather bound Shakespeare volume once - it was a gift to a student from EGGS back in 1920. I still love the book and read it often.
